Garland Theme with Color Customizer

Posted by edcel in blog.

Here’s an update to my previous post about the Garland theme for this website/blog.

I tried searching for some more information because in my previous Garland entry, I said that I couldn’t change the color because the wheel for the color customer was not working; which led me to just use the preset colors, which were shades of blue. I had one heck of a time searching for information on where I could find the proper zip file of this Garland theme without the worry of broken codes or functions.

It turned out that there were some issues as well with this Garland theme between Wordpress and Drupal. It’s something about Wordpress.com releasing the theme to its free wordpress accounts. Anyway, I don’t know much about it as I’m just a blogger who’s using Wordpress.org as my host for my domain site and I just want to use the Garland Theme with Color Customizer template cause I find it simple and nice because you can choose the basic colors of the page depending on your mood.

So, back to the story of me looking for the proper template that I could configure. I later came upon this Chris Meller’s blog about the template.

I just downloaded the zip file provided on that page and I could see the color picker already when I checked the Color Customizer option in the Design tab! Upon uploading it to this site and changing the colors in the boxes, I encountered a problem. I couldn’t save the colors that I’ve changed.

As you can see the photo above, I tried to alter the custom colors, but when I click the “Save Custom Colors’ button, it would just revert to the Default Colors (shown at the photo below.

So when I visited the link again, I forgot to read the blog post about it. After reviewing Chris Merell’s entry, it included a brief explanation of the changes. In order for the Color Picker to follow the set of colors you would like to have, you need to change the ‘functions.php’ code. Just a minor change. You just need to change the word “Presentation” to “Design”, because the Wordpress.org host I use has the term “Design”. Actually, it’s just an educated guess for me because I have another Wordpress.org hosted blog, I think that my other blog isn’t updated yet to the new release, that’s why it still has the tab “Presentation” in it.

GOING BACK…

After the process of changing it and updating the file, I checked the Color Customizer tab and whaddya know? I could change the colors already! I’m so glad I’m able to find the solution for this theme. It took me some time to resolve this issue too. But afterwards, I felt a sense of relief, cause finally; the Garland theme worked! If anybody stumbles upon this page and wants to use the Garland them for their Wordpress hosted blog in their name, you can follow the link for the download.

I finally bought a domain for this blog! I wanted to get my own site cause I have another blog that talked about making your own money online; however, I didn’t have first hand experience in creating a site so at least it would add to my credibility that I was able to make one. Not to mention that I’m learning in the process.

Anyway, I was searching for this Garland theme because that’s what my previous free wordpress account had as the theme. I found this one quite simple and clean. The problem I’m facing right now with this Garland theme is that I’m unable to change the color which is supposed to be the main feature according to the ones who created this template.

Garland by Stefan Nagtegaal and Steven Wittens

A flexible, three-column theme with customizable colors. Design based on Themetastic for Drupal by Stefan Nagtegaal and Steven Wittens.

I downloaded the template here:

There seems to be no “wheel” where you can change the color as I can’t seem to find it. What would appear in the Color Customizer tab would just be the boxes where you can change the html color code. But when I tried to save the codes that I put, it would just revert back to the default color settings which is the color of this site.

I’m still waiting for something to happen as the blue color isn’t very appealing to me. Hopefully, I can find a fix for this. I’ve been searching for different forums and blogs and websites to check if I’m not the only one experiencing this. If ever I won’t be able to find a solution, I’ll find other means.
